Offered in conjunction with the Business Department,
the degree program prepares adults to be effective
contributors to businesses and organizations by
fostering entrepreneurial thinking and applied
systems perspectives. It provides tools to assist
adults to recognize, understand, and respond to
the rapid changes affecting their lives, their
organizations, and their communities. The degree
is available at the Mars Hill campus and satellite
sites in Asheville, Hendersonville, and Burnsville.
Teacher

The teacher education degree is offered through
the Education Department. The degree meets the
state of North Carolina licensure requirements
in the areas of elementary, middle grade, and
secondary levels. STUDENTS PURSUING LICENSURE
ONLY who hold a degree from an accredited higher
education institution are not required to complete
general education requirements in any major in
education. (Major requirements for secondary
[ English, Mathematics,
or Social
Studies] or special subject areas (Art, Music, Physical
Education, or Spanish)
may not be offered in the Adult ACCESS evening program.)
Licensure is available through Adult ACCESS, and
classes are offered at the Mars Hill campus and satellite
sites in Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, Waynesville
and Marion.
Licensure
Add-On Programs
Candidates who have completed
licensure requirements in any field may earn
an additional teaching license in English
as a Second Language (ESL), AIG (Academically
and Intellectually Gifted), Reading, and Special
Education (General Curriculum) by completing
specific courses (re: Adult ACCESS Handbook)
and passing PRAXIS II as required by the state.
Special Education
The major in Special Education is designed to prepare
students for teaching in a general curriculum (K-12).
The curriculum is structured so that prospective
teachers will acquire competencies in learning
disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional
disorders. All students completing this major will
participate in a full semester internship in a
public school while taking related college methods

Social

The Bachelor of Social Work
degree (BSW) is offered in
conjunction with the Business
Department at MHC and prepares
adults for "generalist" social
work practice. The curriculum
focuses on values, knowledge,
and skills requisite for professional
practice so graduates can assist
various individual, family,
group, neighborhood, and community
client systems. Adults can
add a concentration in the
fast-growing field of gerontology
