What is your name?
Deborah Smith Wilson
What is your program of study (major)?
My program of study was Social Work, I graduated
May 2004.
What was the biggest factor for you in your
decision to continue your education? I had been counseling-and
educating people with the intent to empower
for many years. I
decided in order to impact lives on a greater level
it would require the Social Work degree.
What type of work do you do now?
I am working in partnership with MemoryCare. This
a nonprofit organization providing treatment and support
to clients with dementia. I specifically target the
church community making people aware of the services
that we provide. We provide a monthly support group
as well.
What are your plans for the future?
I was recently accepted into the Graduate Program
at the University of South Carolina. I will enter
the Advanced Standing for the Master of Social Work
during the summer. While working on my master's prayerfully
I will work parttime with MemoryCare. After graduation
I would like to work in the VA Medical Center because
there are so many areas of services in this social
environment.
Why did you choose Mars Hill College's Adult
ACCESS Program?
My husband was the catalyst, he encouraged me to
keep reaching my goals. I wanted to be a role model
for our five children, and the Access Program allowed
me to do this in a way that worked for me and my
family. Dean Ray Rapp was one of the first people
that I met when I came in to register. I was impressed
with the accessibility of the staff. I felt comfortable
doing so right away.
What has been your favorite part of being
in college with ACCESS?
The opportunity to discover knowledge in so many
areas. The liberal arts program is so exhaustive,
it opened up the world in ways I had never ~xperienced
before. I have always enjoyed learning new things
and having new experiences. The journey of life
is invigorating as we stretch ourselves. Access
empowered me to do this because it worked for my
family and for me. The staff of ACCESS were always
approachable and supportive. This helped to open
the door to success for me. Success that will touch
lives in such a way to impact life positively for
my fellow man
