What is your name?
Cindy Smith
What is your program of study (major)?
Special Education
What was the biggest factor for you in your
decision to continue your education?
Seeing teachers not individualizing their instruction
to fit each child’s needs; particularly, my
son, but also pertaining to students that have been
in classrooms I have been in. I have been an
integral part in designing instruction and quizzes
to fit different types of students throughout my
career in the Buncombe County School System.
What type of work do you do now?
I am a Teacher Assistant in the Progressive Education
Program at T.C. Roberson High School. I have
been with the school system since 2000. I
have been in a Head Start classroom, first, second,
and third grade Regular Education classrooms. I
love my job and “figuring out” the
best ways for different students to learn. I
was even called “a hero” by one of
my students! He went from a preprimer reading
level in first grade to testing “on grade
level” on his third grade pre-EOG!
What are your plans for the future?
Getting my degree, and being a great teacher that
will affect lives (both students and families)
forever.
Why did you choose Mars Hill College's
Adult ACCESS Program?
I like the quality of the education program and convenience
of the classes. Since I started, the Special
Education Program has been NCATE certified, and it
makes me proud to know that when I graduate, I will
be a “highly qualified teacher”. Also
the instructors, ACCESS staff, and advisors
are always supportive and understanding.
What has been your favorite part of being in
college with ACCESS?
The support is there when I need it. I can call Marie or Chris Cain and
get what I need when I need it. |
